In 2007 Galilee Lutheran Church in Pewaukee and the Ndoombo Parish in Mt. Meru affirmed our formal partnership with each other. This partnership is an extension of the partnership between the Greater Milwaukee Synod and the Diocese of Meru in Tanzania, Arfica. The partnership is an extension of the partnership between the Evangelical Lutheran Church of American (ELCA) and the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Tanzania (ELCT).
Information about the Greater Milwaukee Synod partnership can be found via Partners with Meru.
Galileans have had the opportunity to travel to visit our brothers & sisters in Meru, to worship at Ndoombo, and to walk with our friends in faith half-way around the world. We have also hosted Diocese of Meru delegates including visits to Milwaukee.
We have sponsored several initiatives to improve the lives of those with little resources in Africa.
+ Through the the Galilee Heifer Project, we purchased milking cows for ten of the poorest families in Ndoombo. With the care and support of the congregation in Meru, the heifers have thrived to produce milk and more heifers. The first two calves borne to recipient families have been gifted to two more families, so out of ten there were thirty families that have received life sustaining nutrition and a means of financial support.
+ With the Massaii Well Project, we donated funds to build ten wells in the desert. These wells were built at public locations in order to give access to water to all in the area. Though the Massaii women still draw water by hand from the wells, we are on our way to funding holding tanks to give easier access to all - including the elderly and children.
Both projects were funded with private donations and memorial funds.
Bwana Asifiwi (Praise to God) for the blessing of this partnership!
Tanzania education is patterned after the British school system.
Primary School is mandated by the government, which includes seven years (grades) called "Standards". Students who pass a National Exam after "Standard Seven" (seventh grade) may proceed to Secondary school. All primary school subjects are taught in English, which gives the students a head start at Secondary school. The Diocese of Meru runs three Primary Schools: Akeri, Anande and Angaza.
Secondary School is not mandated by the government. The Tanzanian government requires all subjects, including nationally mandated subjects, to be taught and tested in English at Secondary school. the "grades" at Secondary school are called "Forms" . Ordinary Level is Form 1-4 and Advanced Level is Form 5 & 6. The Diocese of Meru runs six Secondary schools: Ailanga Jr. Seminary, Kikatiti, Leki, Makumira, Ngarenanyuki and Usa River.
Vocational School offers training in a variety of trades and non-degreed vocations including hospitality, tailoring, masonry, auto repair, electrical services, computer science and creative arts. The Diocese of Meru runs three Vocational schools: Leguruki, Mschikamano and Usa River Rehabilitation Center.
Special Education Training Unit (SETU) is housed at Usa River Rehabilitation Center. The school's focus is to prepare students with cognitive disabilities for independent living while developing marketable skills, including creative arts. The SETU also trains adults who want to work with students with disabilities.
There are numerous ways we can support the education initiatives in partnership with the Diocese of Meru including:
~ student scholarships
~ teachers' salaries assistance
~ text books
~ computers for classrooms and labs
~ buses for transportation of students
~ building maintenance/upgrades on aging buildings
Our gifts for education support are applied to where they are most needed as determined by Diocese of Meru Leadership.
